A Tarabuco axsu - double-click to see a close up

The weavings, or axsus are the most popular and most impressive of the products we offer. With a large weaving taking around three months to complete, they are both art works and cultural items. Every weaving is part of a larger, complex cultural traditional, with its own meanings and stories for more see Explaining the weavings. The Tarabuco weavings traditionally come in either blue/purple tones or in brighter, more multicoloured tones. The axsu show cultural scenes such as weddings and fiestas, as well as scenes from the daily life of the Tarabuqueños, and images from well known local children's stories.

Every weaving is backed on black cotton, and has wooden frames top and bottom, to facilitate easy display. This framing can be removed on request, as the weaving itself is simply sown onto its backing, though we believe this system is the best way to display the weavings to their full magnificence.

Every weaving created is unique, an individual expression of its artist. Consequently, the photographs shown here are only examples, not the actual weavings available to buy. If you wish to order any of the products seen here, you can specify the size, colours and quality of the weaving, but we regrettably can not promise to deliver any exact reproductions.
